NEW ORLEANS - A mother and son who served in the NOPD have left the force after pleading guilty to attacking a bar bouncer in Treme in May, District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro announced Friday.

Emelda Blanco, 50, and Gerald Blanco, 31, will be sentenced by a judge. The plea deal required that they leave the NOPD. Emelda Blanco had already retired from the force, facing charges.

A spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office said the Blancos attacked the bouncer after Gerald Blanco was not allowed to enter the bar with a firearm. Blanco was off-duty at the time.

According to Cannizzaro’s office, Gerald Blanco pleaded guilty-as-charged to one count of simple battery and one count of domestic abuse battery. Emelda Blanco pled to one count of aggravated assault and one count of simple battery.

“Citizens should be encouraged by the fact that this criminal justice system was able to not only convict these officers, but also remove them from the NOPD as well as its payroll in a quick and efficient manner,” said Cannizzaro in a statement.

Under Louisiana law, each defendant may be given a sentence not to exceed 6 months on each count. Pursuant to the terms of the plea agreement, the judge will determine the sentence.
