Star Wars Theme, by John Williams
A few years ago, the American Film Institute voted this theme the greatest movie music of all time. With all due respect to Williams and AFI, I consider Randy Newman’s score to The Natural (1984) the greatest score of all time, with James Horner’s score to Field of Dreams (1989) coming in second.
Contenders for the third spot include Aaron Copland’s score for The Red Pony (1949) and Maurice Jarre’s score for Lawrence of Arabia.
With that said, I have no doubt that John Williams is the greatest composer in movie history. I just wouldn’t put any of his scores at the top of the heap. But I’d probably put at least five in the top 50: The Cowboys, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List and, of course, Star Wars.
