HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man who died while trying to help a woman during a purse snatching is being honored for his courage and selflessness.
Sam Irick was shot and killed in November of last year after trying to help a woman as a gunman tried to steal her purse. Irick has now been selected as a finalist for the 'Citizen Service Before Self' honors. The finalists and winners are chosen by the recipients of the Medal of Honor.
They'll make their final decision two weeks from today.
Anthony Ferrell, 39, is charged with capital murder in Irick's death.
[“Slain good Samaritan being honored for courage,” by Anonymous, KTRK-TV Houston/ABC13, March 7, 2011.]
Sam Irick is allegedly dead because although 39-year-old, lifelong persistent felony offender Anthony Ferrell had repeatedly violated his parole, the members of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles refused to revoke parole, and instead sent him to a no-security halfway house which he never should have been placed in, and from which he walked away. At the time of allegedly murdering Irick, on November 7, Ferrell was a fugitive from justice for a month, but prior to his allegedly starring in a murder videotape, no one in the Texas criminal justice bureaucracy was interested in apprehending him.
