GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman died and two men were taken to hospitals after a shooting on Grand Rapids’ southeast side Thursday night, police say.
Around 7 p.m., the Grand Rapids Police Department was called to Pastiche Dr. SE near Eastern Avenue for a report of several gunshot victims.
A woman was pronounced dead at the scene and two men were taken to hospitals in “serious condition,” according to a release from GRPD.
GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said the shooting stemmed from an argument that happened just outside an apartment building.
“There was an argument, words were exchanged, shots were fired, and then at least one shooter fled in a vehicle,” he said.
He said police do not have a license plate, description or a name of a suspect. Investigators are still in the area collecting evidence, “numerous” shell casings and talking to witnesses.
“There are a substantial amount of shell casings out there. It does look like the potential for more than one shooter. Possible that it was a drive-by, that there were more than one vehicle,” said Winstrom, clarifying that he believes there is no threat to the public.
“It was not a random act of violence. It’s likely these two men were targeted,” Winstrom said.
The woman who was killed was a mother around 50 years old, according to Winstrom. The two men who were shot and hospitalized were in their 30s, he said. None of the victims were immediately identified by police.
“This will be the 12th murder of the year that the Grand Rapids Police Department has investigated. It’s 12 too many,” Winstrom said.
