"Washington (7news) — the suspects connected to a northwest, D.C. man's stabbing death back on april 5 allegedly used his severed thumb to access his phone and take money, according to police documents obtained by 7news.

They are supposed to make an impression of the thumb with a transparency to present to the phone. Not carry the thumb around in a jar or something.

You probably could not carry the thumb around for long after it becomes to decay. I guess if you carried the thumb in a jar full of formaldehyde it would be OK then.
