GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Toxicology tests for Patrick Lyoya show he was over the legal limit for driving when he was pulled over by a Grand Rapids police officer who ultimately shot and killed him.

Patrick Lyoya’s blood alcohol content level was .29, the Kent County medical examiner confirmed to news 8 Friday.

Michigan’s legal limit for driving is .08. Lyoya had previous convictions for drunken driving.

The medical examiner’s autopsy found Lyoya, 26, died of a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. That was also the conclusion of an independent autopsy commissioned by Lyoya’s family’s attorneys.

Lyoya died April 4. Grand Rapids Police Department Officer Chris Schurr pulled him over on the city’s Southeast side. Video released by GRPD shows Lyoya ran away and Schurr gave chase. There was a struggle that included Lyoya grabbing Schurr’s Taser. Schurr, who was on top of Lyoya trying to hold him down, ultimately shot Lyoya in the head.

Documents released by GRPD last week show that officers who arrived after Lyoya was shot also suspected the passenger in Lyoya’s car was either drunk or high.

Lyoya’s attorneys have argued that the reason Lyoya was pulled over is inconsequential. They say that Schurr repeatedly failed to deescalate the situation. They have called for him to be fired and charged.

Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting. The case report has been passed along to the Kent County prosecutor, but at last check earlier this week, MSP and the prosecutor were still awaiting forensic reports from the manufacturer of the officer’s body camera and Taser. The prosecutor says he will not make a decision about whether the shooting was justified or whether charges are warranted without that information.

GRA: That drunk, that early in the day. No wonder he wouldn't follow orders—he was barely above being conscious. I could not tell from the video that he was drunk, though.

  1. So I guess importing useless niggers from Africa who get drunk is 'who we are' these days.

0.29 is almost 4x over the legal limit of 0.08.

State moves to block release of certain driver records, then reverses itself

The Michigan Department of State said Friday it would no longer release the driving records of victims of violence, but Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reversed the policy change a few hours later. ... In an unsigned news release issued earlier Friday, the Department of State, which Benson heads, said its sudden policy change was related to the police killing in Grand Rapids last week of Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old unarmed Black man, during a traffic stop.

I don't know if his driving record matters much, since at the time of the stop the cop didn't know who was driving (to whom was the car registered?) -- but stupid women like this who react emotionally will destroy civilization -- giving them power is insane.

After some initial confusion/obfuscation (link), it seems clear now that Lyoya was driving 8link) -- was intoxication/erratic driving also part of the reason he was stopped?

Anyway, while his drunkenness may partly explain his belligerence, I doubt it will play much of a role in deciding if the cop is charged.

  2. A typical Lyoya day:His background is replete with drunk driving, driving with an expired license and stealing cars--bingo--the trifecta.

At .29 on the drunk-o-meter,99% of people would black out--and not remember anything about that inebriation. In his condition,Lyoya would be more likely to grab the taser, zap the cop, grab his pistol and shoot him with it--and claim he was too drunk to know what he was doing. In cases where nigs are drug crazed or plastered on booze--anything goes.

The cop was within his rights to stop Lyoya from grabbing his taser--the first step to Officer Schurr's possible demise--IF Lyoya had succeeded in obtaining possession of the taser.
