PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Two suspects have been arrested in connection to a shooting near the Cinco de Mayo festival at Waterfront park.

Police said Bruce Holdman, 20, was arrested at the Rose Quarter Transit Station on Tuesday. He faces charges of attempted murder, assault in the first degree and unlawful use of a weapon.

A second suspect, identified as 17-year-old Zachery Sanders, was detained near Skidmore Fountain immediately after the shooting and was later determined to be involved, along with Holdman, police said. Sanders also faces Measure 11 charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault.

Emergency crews were called to the shooting scene outside the festival, along the seawall north of the Morrison Bridge, at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"A person was allegedly [sic] shot, and came to one of our entry gates for assistance. Our gate person let him in and had one of our First Aid people tend to him right away," said Stefanie Lamberson, one of the event's organizers.

[A person was not “allegedly shot.” Either he was or he wasn’t shot.]

Police and medical crews located the gunshot victim, identified as 19-year-old Robert Beckles, who suffered a wound described as non-life threatening. He was taken to a Portland hospital for treatment and was continuing to recover Wednesday, according to police.

People who attended the festival were disappointed to hear about what had happened.

“You go there for a good time, take your kids. I can't say anything else except for it's scary," said Rebecca Sanchez.

Investigators said the shooting does not appear to be related to the Cinco de Mayo event. Beckles had been involved in a dispute with the shooter, police said.

[The last sentence was superfluous. If a stranger attacks you unprovoked, at least if he’s black, the police automatically say you had a “dispute” with him. The only “dispute” police probably know about is that the shooter shot Beckles. Therefore, that would be the honest way to write the last sentence. However, since “The shooter shot Beckles” is a tautology, that sounds stupid. By contrast, “Beckles had been involved in a dispute with the shooter” suggests that there’s a “there” there, some sort of development, when there isn’t any. It’s just a linguistic Oakland.]

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.

  1. An "argument". A "dispute". "Predominant". "Allegedly". The media has a copy book of such words to be used when describing such "incidents".

  2. Portland OR. The Pacific northwest. All these whitey that want to start their own whitey homeland in the Pacific northwest had better forget it. THEY are THERE too and have been for some time.
