In one message, he wrote: “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, hitler, and pol pot... Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.” Other messages contained further violent rhetoric directed at the Republican lawmaker. Jones publicly apologized for the texts during the campaign, stating he was "ashamed" of his words and acknowledged they were "objectionable" and "abhorrent". Despite calls from Republicans and some prominent Democrats to withdraw from the race, he remained the Democratic nominee and won the election.
