War and raiding was a way of life for many American Indian tribes. War was a way for young men to win glory and respect and to gather wealth by stealing horses and people as slaves or captives to rasnsom. Apaches looked at White men with scorn for working so hard when Apaches could steal what they wanted. Among the Blackfeet, one war party would return and another would soon leave. There were some peaceful tribes but many were truly enemies of peace.
