(11 Alive)DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 20-year-old man is dead, and four others are injured after an attempted robbery escalated into a shooting at a DeKalb County car meet-up early Sunday morning, according to police.

The department said in a news release that its officers responded to the shooting just after 2 a.m. in the 5300 block of Panola Industrial Boulevard.

On Monday, the family of the 20-year-old victim identified him as Evan Garner. His picture is shown below.

11Alive's Chase Houle spoke with Joseph Helms, who has been friends with Garner for several years He is devastated by the news.

Helms described the moment the shots went off.

"It was the first shot that went off, and during that first shot, he dropped and then Taylor was confused as to why he dropped to the ground, so she walked over to go check on him, and he was touching his chest like he couldn't breathe or something like that," said Helms.

According to DeKalb County Police, four teens were shot and taken to the hospital. A 16-year-old boy, who was shot in his arms and legs, and a 19-year-old man, who was shot in his stomach, were taken to the hospital in a "life-threatening" condition.
