"The star frequently played a German soldier in Hollywood films like The Wild Geese and starred [sic] alongside John Wayne in Howard Hawks' Hatari!" [N.S.: And, lest we forget, Robert Aldrich's The Flight of the Phoenix (1965). Kruger didn't "star alongside John Wayne" in Hatari!, he supported him in it.]

Hardy Kruger played a shell-shocked war veteran in the 1962 French film "Sundays and Cybele." His co-star was the enchanting child actress Patricia Gozzi as the titular heroine. I found it a very impressive and touching film when I saw it during its first theatrical release. Incidentally, Patricia's look-alike sister Chantal Gozzi appeared in "Leon Morin, Priest" (1961) with Jean-Paul Belmondo. Although the two girls are not twins, the resemblance between them is so strong that Wikipedia mistakes Chantal for Patricia in its entry for the Belmondo movie.

ReplyDeleteI remember him in Barry Lyndon, a movie that got absolutely trashed by critics when it first came out, kind of a Heaven's Gate type thrashing. But when I watched it some years later, I really liked it. Well acted and produced period piece with good characters and an interesting story. It had a lot of hype before release and I suspect critics were just trying to seem like they were anti establishment in not liking the big budge big hype movie.
Hardy Kruger's character in The Wild Geese (1978) was a South African.
