FIRE is defending a music theory journal at the University of North Texas from an unwarranted investigation after it defended a 19-century composer from allegations of racism. FIRE's letter reminded UNT of the public institution's responsibilities to uphold the First Amendment rights of its faculty and students. UNT must cease its investigation into the journal.
Last week, Auburn University said it was looking at "options" following comments by Jesse Goldberg, a lecturer whose condemnations of police had sparked calls for his termination. After receiving a letter from FIRE, Auburn now says it will "not take adverse action against Dr. Goldberg or any member of the Auburn community based on" protected speech.

Tax-exempt status is fundamental to the livelihood of most nonprofits and educational institutions. The importance of keeping that status from being awarded or rescinded on a political basis is crucial. The Treasury Department should tread carefully.
Princeton professor Peter Singer has been called "the world's most influential living philosopher." But he may be as controversial as he is influential.
