When McCain won the 2008 South Carolina GOP Primary, which put him on the road to the nomination, voters were interviewed. These "conservative" McCain voters were shocked to learn their man was for amnesty.
South Carolina Republicans voted for McCain because he was a "war hero" and never bothered to check his policy positions. In my experience, this is par for the course for self-described "conservatives."
Of course, South Carolina Republicans fall over themselves to vote for Graham every time he runs.
