King Vidor: The Men Who Made the Movies (1973) Richard Schickel’s TV Documentary on PBS (Video)

When I saw this episode of the documentary in 1973, it had a profound effect on me, particularly the passage on The Crowd (1930).

    I always saw the name and wondered,"what's the deal with that name?"

    His name at birth was King Wallis Vidor. His paternal grandfather, Károly
    Vidor was a Hungarian immigrant. Haven't yet been able to find an explanation for the name.

    It's not totally uncommon as a name. You've probably seen the actor King Donovan, who was in INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and a million other things (and was married to Imogene Coca). "Royal" turns up occasionally also as a name (as with the prolific character actor Royal Dano), though they sometimes shorten it to "Roy."
