Interesting perspective on RFK Jr.

The author below, Michael Bernick, is not a broad-spectrum opinionator on political subjects. I see him as always measured and thoughtful.

"it has only been a few weeks since Robert F. Kennedy was confirmed as the new secretary of the health and human services (hhs) agency. but already he is being characterized in corners of the media and public health establishment as a threat to the nation's health, whose first actions as Secretary ignore settled-science and are outside the mainstream of the previous HHS Secretaries.

It is time to take a step back and halt the rush to judgment. Contrary to media headlines, Kennedy is not ending vaccines, or ignoring expert opinion, or taking ADHD medicines away from children.

The autism community is one of the health communities Kennedy has been active in over the years. As a member of this community since 1991, when my son was diagnosed, I'd like to offer a brief personal perspective on Kennedy's involvement with our community, his approach to settled- science, and how he does represent a break from his predecessors at HHS.

Kennedy and the Autism Community

During Kennedy's confirmation, his opponents among the Democratic Party leadership (all 48 Democratic Senators voted against him) claimed that he was an "anti-vaxxer", opposed to vaccines, peddling unproven theories linking vaccines to autism.

In his confirmation hearings, Kennedy clearly stated that he would take no action to halt vaccines or discourage people from taking vaccines. Several Republican Senators, initially skeptical of confirmation, came away from discussions with Kennedy assured that he was not opposed to vaccines, and would not undermine vaccine protocols. Still, even since these hearings, the anti-vaccine label has continued to be used by the media and political opponents, and should call forth correction.

I have not been a proponent of the autism-vaccine linkage. However, there is a segment of our autism community that does believe (often fervently so) there is evidence demonstrating such linkage. With deep commitment, they have pursued a campaign to recognize this evidence and try to improve our public health policies. Beginning in the early 2000s, they reached out to Kennedy, due to his history of challenging the health establishment on a range of environmental and health issues.

I went to the doc today for a physical. Everything was fine except the cholesterol was a tad high. Everything else was better than I thought it'd be-- kidneys, liver, carotid artery, lungs, heart all excellent.

Then I passed out--I'm KIDDING.
He asked me if I wanted flu and Covid vaxxes.

"Nope."

"Okay,fine."

Always good to leave a doctor's office the way I did today
