“As they both lament the loss of Gene’s mother, Gene and his father grow closer. His father then opens up about how, as a little child, their father abandoned them, exposing the resentment that has pervaded the entire family.

“Film Description: Gene Garrison (Gene Hackman) is a successful college professor, who has a rocky relationship with his dad, Tom (Melvyn Douglas). He believes that his father has never truly accepted him and worries about how his plans to move to California and marry his girlfriend may affect his relationship with his father. His mother (Dorothy Stickney) encourages Gene to move on despite how Tom may feel. But when his mother dies, Gene worries that his marriage and move might depress his father even more.”

I tried to watch this back in the 1980s. Did not succeed.

TEST RESULTS SHOW NEITHER OF THE HACKMANS DIED OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

Feb. 28 (UPI) — Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning, the Santa Fe Sheriffs Department in New Mexico said Friday, one day after they were found dead with their dog.

Though the results were negative, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said during a news conference that a pathologist will decide whether to rule out the poisonous gas as the cause of death.

Mwendoza told reporters the “manner and cause of death have not been determined” but autopsy findings noted no external trauma. A toxicology report may take up to three months though initial autopsy findings noted no external trauma.

“We’re keeping everything on the table,” Mendoza said.

Also, he said it was likely neither Hackman, 95, nor Arakawa, 65, had a fatal fall.

They haven’t determined who died first, Mendoza said.

GRA:I still believe my scenario will prevail, that Mrs Hackman either overdosed or died of cardiac related issues in the bathroom, followed by Mr.Hackman wandering in to see her collapsed on the floor--with the shock killing him as well. The dead dog ate the pills and overdosed.

Doctor Michael Baden thought that HACKMAN died first and Gene's wife dropped dead afterwards from shock. The dog,he thinks, died of dehydration.

NOT BREAKING NEWS:GENE HACKMAN "COULDN'T RIDE A BIKE ANYMORE AT 95"--AND FRIENDS REVEAL
HIS WIFE WAS IN "PERFECT HEALTH".

(people)Friends of Gene Hackman, who was found dead on Wednesday alongside wife Betsy Arakawa, are reflecting on the late actor's final years, including his declining health.

According to family friends Daniel and Barbara Lenihan, Hackman's condition was "really slipping" in the "last couple of months" before his shocking death, the couple shared with People magazine in an interview published Friday.

While the Lenihans did not disclose details on Hackman's failing health, Daniel noted that the Oscar-winning actor was "essentially kind of homebound," with Barbara adding that the 95-year-old had stopped riding his bike through their Santa Fe, New Mexico, neighborhood.

A spokesperson from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office confirmed to USA TODAY on Thursday that deputies had found Hackman and Arakawa, 64, deceased in separate rooms on Wednesday afternoon at around 1:45 p.m.

An exact cause of death has not been determined, though the spokesperson said foul play is not suspected. An investigation is ongoing.

Hackman's other friend, Stuart Ashman, reflected in a Monday interview with Fox News that the actor was "slowing down" in recent years due to his age.

"After COVID, he was more reclusive, protecting his immune system and everything else," Ashman told the outlet. "I really am puzzled by the whole thing.

While speaking to People, Daniel and Barbara Lenihan's son Aaron said Arakawa strived to look after Hackman's health despite his senility.

"She was still trying to keep him as active and engaged and healthy as possible," said Aaron, with activities that included puzzles and daily yoga via Zoom. Barbara Lenihan added: "Betsy was in perfect health (and) was so fit."

Although the pair led low-key lives, Aaron Lenihan recalled that "they were one of the tightest couples I've seen."
