It's expected this kind of incident will be 'politicized' for the following simple reason (besides the most obvious reason, which is gun control):
Regarding homicidal violence statistically, in a big majority of cases (80+%) the victim and perpetrator know each other, including having a family relationship -- so there is usually a clear motive that is particular to the parties involved.
Stranger homicide is relatively uncommon -- when it does occur, there is also usually an obvious motive, e.g. robbery, a more or less random encounter/dispute, or maybe something personal like an ex is involved in a new relationship ('love triangle').
A mass, apparently motiveless, stranger homicide like Highland Park is rather rare -- because there is no obvious motive, it's bound to be 'politicized' as people look for a broader societal reason to explain why it happened (which is a kind of motive).
Highland Park too known as a Joo-ish community. Not predominant but a goodly number. A suburb most well-to-do also. So this a rare event. Man bites dog so to speak.
