This is just for fun.
52 years ago today, the top 10 songs of July 4th, 1969 (and a few others):
My local station 1480 has an old-fashioned countdown every Sunday around 2 p.m. Today’s were very pleasant to listen to, so I jotted them down and decided to post them here.
1) “In the Year 2525”/Zager and Evans
2) “Moonflight”/Vic Venus
(This was one of those songs where an announcer asked someone a question and the “interviewee” answered it in a brief clip of a hit song. Big, back then.)
3) Ballad of John and Yoko/Beatles
4) “Love Theme” from Romeo and Juliet/Henry Mancini
5) “One”/Three Dog Night
6) “Sugar, Sugar”/Archies
7) “In the Ghetto”/Elvis Presley
8) “Crystal Blue Persuasion”/Tommy James and the Shondells
9) “Let Me”/Paul Revere and the Raiders
(Never heard of it)
10) “Israelites”/Desmond Dekker and the Aces
Other great tunes were:
11) “Baby, I Love You”/Andy Kim
12) “Ruby”/Kenny Rogers and the First Edition
19) “Sweet Caroline”/Neil Diamond
25) “Soul Deep”/Box Tops
Look them up and enjoy.

Yes, great stuff. Even if some of the songs were a bit on the bland easy listenish side they are at least well constructed with strong melodies. While I hear and exception once in a while, nowadays, the top 40 is heavily laden with poorly constructed amateurish songs and a warbling "singer" supported by auto tune trying to sell a weak melody. Then there's the rap...don't get me started on that.
"7) 'In the Ghetto'/Elvis Presley"
Elvis I am sure knew a lot about life in the "ghetto".
