I saw this story earlier in the day – it’s time - hell, it’s PAST time - for the USA to begin funding a SERIOUS program of K-12 foreign language instruction in selected regions.
We could target different languages in specific regions. Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Russian, German and Italian. In addition to the usual Spanish and French. By focusing certain languages to be acquired in targeted regions, we can maximize the impact.
Any students identified to be particularly gifted at that language would be given access to summer immersion programs by middle school age, and special opportunities for college work, in selected facilities - NOT the usual colleges. We want these students to be provided with pro-American values, and intensive training in history, civics, business, and military history. They could provide our future diplomatic corps with useful and LOYAL representatives. Those high school and college institutions might start with a combination of online and in-person education, and ramp up as the number of students increased. Instructors would be vetted for their character and background - no ideologues, Left or extreme Right.
Farsi? Beverly Hills.

ReplyDeleteEnglish is taught in many foreign countries as part of the curriculum from 1st on up. India, for example, pushes English very hard and many Indians are quite fluent as a result, one of the reasons so many Indian men target the US and the UK for immigration and call centers are located in India, not to mention online/phone scammers originate from India. These vast numbers of English speakers, especially in rival countries, give our enemies an espionage advantage, a gap that needs to be closed, so yes, it's time to start training our citizens to speak other languages.
