I saw some videos on you tube from westerners who have lived in China and know what it is like and they say the situation is much, much worse than we've been told. It was an hour long show displaying a lot of the unhygienic, medieval meat markets of live animals and exotics that bring about these zoonotic diseases. The superstitious nature and lack of personal hygiene over there is mentioned. It also showed how the government lies about bad news and buries such information with an Ostrich head in the sand stubbornness, similar to the denial of the reality of the seriousness of the Chernobyl accident. If this thing was treated seriously back in early December as it should have been after the SARS warning not too long ago, it could have been contained. Instead it looks like it is all over in China now. Some nasty images of bats on dinner plates show the probable cause as SARS and MERS were bat viruses and bats in particular have strange immune systems and are considered very dangerous animals to handle due to disease threats. That government can interfere in all kinds of petty personal details, but it can't manage to ban bats from the human food chain?
