Supporting United Against Hate Week

Commentary on "hate" from all over:

Mark Steyn: The British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal regards it as an entirely feasible project to eradicate quote "hate" from society, even though hate is a human emotion that has beat in the human heart for all eternity.

John Derbyshire: I'll tell you what I hate: I hate the stupid, bogus, degraded vocabulary of "hate" and "bigotry" and "exclusion" that is now the default vocabulary for talking about national issues. I sure do hate that.

Fred Reed:  Liberals believe that we should all love one another, and they hate those who don't.

Samuel Huntington, quoted:  Huntington argues that for centuries civilizations have been kept apart by distance and serious geographical obstacles. However, modern technologies are eroding these obstacles and as civilizations begin to interact on a more regular basis they will find each other so repugnant they will be unable to resist trying to slaughter one another.

Huntington direct:  Fifth, and finally, is the ubiquity of conflict.  It is human to hate.  For self-definition and motivation people need enemies: competitors in business, rivals in achievement, opponents in politics.  They naturally distrust and see as threats those who are different and have the capability to harm them.

Chancellor's Office
Today marks the start of United Against Hate Week. Across the Bay Area, individuals, schools, municipalities, and a broad range of civic organizations are holding events designed to catalyze the awareness and actions necessary to confront hatred in its every form. I am proud that many of our students are participating in this essential effort. A full list of scheduled events on the campus and beyond can be found here: https://unitedagainsthateweek.org/find-events
In September, as the semester began, I sent a message to campus about the priority I place on creating a culture of belonging at Berkeley, without which we cannot sustain our Principles of Community or fulfill our academic mission. Hatred is antithetical to belonging, to respect, to understanding, and to learning itself. We must defend our commitment to diversity and inclusion by remaining united in our condemnation of abhorrent ideologies that promote hatred on the basis of an individual's origins or identity.
In these angry, polarized times, we must also find ways to engage respectfully with those who do not share our beliefs. We can learn from difference and use that knowledge to improve our ability to make a case for our own perspectives. If we can engage in respectful debate and abide by our Principles of Community, differences of opinion need not lead to divides and our heterogeneous community can thrive without homogeneity of belief and perspective.

Sincerely,

Carol Christ
Chancellor

Huntington quote:"We'll find other people so repugnant (with technology leading the way to meeting those people),that we wont he able to avoid killing each other."
It's a variation of my theory of WHY diversity may be causing an increase of mass shootings. Now a mass murdering stand up comic might say,"there's only a few people us mass killers can really tolerate for any period of time--before I,personally, get sick of them being on the same planet that I'm on.I made a list:Girlfriends--a couple hours,wives-- a few weeks, all other relatives--20 MINUTES,TOPS!!!After that,I start thinking about the guns I have in my closet. The rest of the world--I immediately think--where's my rifle?"
That's not me talking about myself lol,but there is
a group of people(5 percent?)with an edge to them--who don't suffer idiots well--and are now firing bullets when provoked (in their minds--which is all that counts).
Fred Reed's comment was spot on--"liberals believe we should all love one another and they hate those that don't."
Yogi Berra would nod at that one.

I am not sure what hate is. Can someone define that word to me?
