SWAT teams secured the Tree of Life synagogue and the perimeter, which includes at least two other synagogues on the same parcel of land.

Minutes ago, Pittsburgh Chief of Public Safety Wendell D. Hissrich held a press conference with other community leaders, including the governor, mayor, and congressmen, in which he barely held it together.

Fighting back tears, Hissrich reported that there’s no active threat. The crime is considered a federal matter, The FBI is the lead agency. Not sure of number of fatalities. Emergency line 4 family of victims: (412) 432-4400.

"This falls under hate crime": Public Safety Director Wendell D. Hissrich.

Hissrich of how the crime scene was one of the worst he'd ever seen, noting that he'd been at plane crashes. He refused to give a death count, or say whether any children were killed, but his physical response suggested that the worst imaginable scenario had happened.

Another community leader said that he and many other leaders had grown up in Squirrel Hill, even just down the street from the synagogue, and that it would be impossible for any one of them not to know victims.
