In an undergraduate philosophy class called “Love and Friendship,” my professor had us read (along with Plato, Aristotle, C.S. Lewis, Eric Fromm and Eric Segal) lesbian activist Rita Mae Brown’s ideological rant cum “novel,” Rubyfruit Jungle.

The book served as vehicle to promote Brown’s belief that the world consists of two types: Those who are openly homosexual, and everyone else, who are all closet cases.
