I remember Dean Smith's first black player, Charley Scott, who was a sophomore in 1967-68. Scott was from Harlem and got a scholarship to a private school in North Carolina. Dean Smith and UNC decided Scott would be ideal as their first Negro athlete.
Scott, like many of the First Black Players, had a middle class veneer, and was somewhat different from the current UNC black athletes involved in the recent "academic" scandal. He's had several corporate jobs post-basketball.
